Why should we elope in Audubon Park/Tree of Life?

Audubon Park is located in uptown New Orleans close to the Mississippi River. Owned by the City of New Orleans since the 1800s, it’s home to a zoo, a golf course, and dozens of walking paths. Easily found on the St Charles streetcar line, it’s close to many bars and restaurants (for post-ceremony drinks and dinner!). The Tree of Life has a truly mystical quality that isn’t found anywhere else in the City.

Where can we elope in Audubon Park?

There are many wonderful places in Audubon Park to get married. The Tree of Life is by far the most popular choice. This massive tree is one of the largest in the South (35 feet in circumference – you have to see it to believe it) and some records suggest it was planted in the 1700s. While it’s located behind the zoo and a few blocks from St. Charles Avenue, it feels completely remote and romantic underneath the large branches. Right around the corner is the gorgeous Oak Alley, another favorite. There’s also the beautiful St Charles Avenue entrance and courtyard and many little bridges, pavilions, and water banks. I’m happy to walk through these options with you and choose the one best suited for your day.

What if we get to the Tree of Life, and someone else is getting married there?

Look – it happens! I’ve shown up to photograph elopements at the Tree of Life and another couple is totally getting married there. Fortunately, elopement ceremonies are typically 20 minutes are less and people are very considerate. If we show up and there’s another wedding taking place, I always suggest to start with some portrait time close to the tree – once the ceremony is done, it’s your turn!

Do we need a permit?

Yes! As of 2024, you now need a $150 permit to elope and take photos in any of the green spaces in the park (Tree of Life, Oak Alley, etc!). To obtain your permit, click here.

What time of day is best?

I always recommend either early in the morning or an hour or two before sunset for the best lighting.

What do I need to bring?
